Check who can see family photos.
Review followers and the audience on older posts, new posts and Stories. Remove unwanted followers from private accounts. Public posts remain public even after you remove a follower. Keep family photos off public creator pages when you want a limited audience.
Choose what you share.
Use a limited, trusted audience for family images. Check for names, school details and location clues before posting. Ask relatives to respect the same sharing boundaries. Privacy settings can reduce exposure; they cannot prevent every copy or misuse.
Make it easy for your child to tell you.
Explain that AI can turn an ordinary photo into an explicit fake. Reassure them that they can ask for help, even if someone threatens them. Creating or forwarding abusive images of others is never okay. A child targeted by abuse is not to blame.
Report without spreading the image.
Report the post or account to the platform and suspected exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline. Note usernames, links and dates without copying explicit images. Do not download, screenshot or forward the abusive image. Do not pay someone threatening to share it.
Know where to get help.
CyberTipline: report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678. Take It Down may help limit sharing of explicit images depicting someone under 18 on participating public or unencrypted services. The affected person must already have the file. Do not download an image to use the tool. Immediate danger: call 911 in the U.S.
